IMC 2008 Objectives

1. to organize an international mathematics competition for key stage II (upper primary education) and key stage III (lower secondary education) students.
2. to motivate students and teachers to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics and high-order thinking skills.
3. to establish cooperation networks of international mathematics improvement.  
4. to provide students with opportunities to exchange mathematics knowledge and practice, and cultural experiences among participating cities and countries.    
5. to upgrade school curriculum concerning mathematics to international standards.

Divisions of Competition

Qualifications of Participants

Participants must have the following qualifications:

1. Key Stage II: Students have not enrolled at secondary schools or at any equivalent institutions, and were born on or after 1 October 1995.
2. Key Stage III: Students have not enrolled upper secondary education or any of its equivalence, and were born on or after 1 October 1992.

Participation and Application

Participation in the competition is by invitation. Any invited city or country may apply up to 4 teams to participate in each division. Each team may comprise to a maximum of 6 members: a team leader, a deputy leader, and up to 4 students.  

Types of Contest

There will be two kinds of contest in each division namely, individual and team contests. All participants must participate in both contests and other activities, as scheduled.  

Competition papers

Proposed problems written in English should be submitted to IMC 2008 Committee for consideration and preparation of competition papers. The competition papers may be translated into each country’s native language during a specified scheduled date.

Competition committee

The competition committee comprises of experts from Thailand and 1 team leader from each participating team.    

Awards and Prizes

1. Individual Award: gold, silver and bronze medals

Approximately two-thirds of the participants will receive individual awards in the form of gold, silver and bronze medals, with approximate ratio of 1:2:3.

1. Team Award: gold, silver and bronze medals

In the team competition, prizes will be given to the three teams achieving the highest scores in different groups. Grouping will be done through drawing lots.

1. Highest Total Scores Award: grand, second, third and honorable prizes

The Grand Prize is awarded according to the sum of the four team members’ scores in the individual competition, and of the team’s scores in the team competition. Second, third, and honorable prizes will also be awarded.

1. Certificate: Every participant receives an IMC 2008 certificate.

Period of application and procedure

1. Each participating city or country has to apply for its participation. It should specify the number of participating teams for each division to the organizer through an e-mail. A notice of confirmation will be sent on or before 15  May  2008.
2. For each level, a participating team should submit 10 English-translated problems and solutions: 5 for individual competition, and another 5 for team competition, on or before 15 August 2008.
3. A filled-up application form must be submitted via e-mail to the organizer on or before 30 August 2008.
4. Each participating team must inform the organizer about its arrival and departure schedule on or before 30 September 2008.

Expenses

1. The organizer will take charge of all official expenses of the teams from each invited city or country, including accommodations, meals, transportation, and study tours during the official period of the competition in Chiangmai, Thailand (25-30 October 2008). Observers, parents or other accompanying persons will be responsible for their own expenses.
2. Each participating team is responsible for the travelling expenses from its homeland to Chiangmai Airport, including visa fees and other expenses for its entry to Thailand.
3. Observers, parents or other accompanying person, who would like to stay with the participants, have to pay US$500 for accommodation, meals, transportation, and study tours during the period of official competition in Chiangmai, Thailand (25-30 October 2008).

Medical Care for Participants

The organizer will procure accident insurance to all participants during the official period of the competition. The insurance will cover accidents leading to death or permanent disability of the body; therefore, all participants are advised to arrange medical insurance for themselves.

15.

Additional Information

Each participating country should provide the followings:

1. to inform the organizer in advance of any specified dietary requirements or restrictions;   
2. to prepare a 5-minute cultural performance for the cultural night;
3. to organize a country-introduction exhibition;
4. to complete visa procedures before arriving in Thailand.
